Hello Gary I hope you were not under the impression that the Large Hadron Collider was in any way near full power, full luminosity or with anywhere near the operating capacity of proton bundles that this juggernaut is capable of working with.

If so then I wholeheartedly congratulate the scientific community for operating the machine so close to the 9/11 significant date and actually choosing a set of numbers 10/9/08 to mark the beginnings of a countdown to deliberately run a non collision beam run. The dangerous possibilities that are addressed on this site do require that the machine needs to actually be in operation.

If the scientific community wish to thread tiny low powered beams from here to kingdom come then that would delight a great number of opponents of the machine.

Gary, dismissing someone as a nut is a personal attack and not relevant to the discussion. And the Y2K is neither comparable or relevant - at worst it was going to cause some serious consequences, even some loss of life, but not an extinction event.

The concerns raised should be addressed openly, on their merits, and proved/disproved, before moving on. The onus of proof should be upon science, and not on vilification of those who raise concerns. Let's get away from mob mentality. What is the worst that can happen if the concerns are given some more airtime? Nothing. Perhaps some costs, perhaps some bruised egos. What is the worst that can happen if we're hasty? Extinction. Seems pretty simple, really.

Here is another "the end is nigh" fatalist who has inconclusive evidence based on unproven assumptions trying to stop the march of science. It apparently is not only religious fanatics who would consume the world with the fear of the unknown. This just brings to mind the Y2K phenomenon which amounted to a hill of beans, or slightly smaller, depending on your perspective.
